As I indicated in another thread, I would love to see Clay Busters, Duster or Downrange make us a true 1 oz. wad for the 28 ga. but that is pure wishful thinking. No one has made a clone wad for 1 oz. 20 ga.loads like the old WWAA 20F1 or Rem SP 20 wad and the 20 ga. is a whole lot more popular than the 28 ga.

These days Win & Rem are far more interested in selling you a new box of AA’s or STS’s than they are in selling you components and if they do, they are sure you pay the price for them.

Thank Junnie for the wad photo, I was always curious but had never cut a shell apart. I wonder if that is the same wad they are using in their 28 ga. steel load?

Ballistic Products Magnum 28. . 1 oz wads HV 28. . .
Will be loading in Winchester HS hulls, and or older Winchester AA hulls.

Balistic Products makes a one ounce wad. . Lime Green in color. . . Only loading data is for the Fiocchi hulls etc.

Good friend started experimenting with 20/28 in the above mentioned hull. Blew several shells up, very dangerous work.
Did come up with a load of some sort, nothing I'm going to drop.

I've purchased Winchester one ounce loads for pheasant and they work fantastically. Shot and killed pheasant and quail at 30 + plus yards...... I can't walk very far, but my son is into killing things and at $15.00 plus per box it's worth reloading.

Thanks........ Junnie

Many of us stand corrected in BPI's Small Bore Manual they have a recipe for 1oz load in win. AA HS hulls.
28ga win AA HS hull,
Win. 209 primer,
Steel power 13 grns.,
HV28 wad,
1oz shot wgt.,
11800 psi,
1100 fps.

For myself, I have a good supply of Winchester both AA and AA-HS 1-oz. shells, in shot sizes 5 to 8. (Several boxes of each, 5s, 6s, 7 1/2s and 8s.) These are "left-overs" that I have from when I was writing for a shooting magazine, which Winchester generously supplied me with, as I wrote up all their new products when they were released. (I did the same for all the shell companies if they provided the products for evaluation.)

I only use them for when conditions warrant, as the 3/4 oz. at 1200 - 1250 fps loads do 95% of the work for me.

And no, I don't believe they are the same wad they use for steel - steel wads from their OTHER gauges in "clay target size", which are 7s (and I have used them and disassembled them) are very thick so there is NO POSSIBLE contact of the shot to the bore of the gun.

Eeesh, I don't like 1100 fps. I'd much rather give up 1/8oz of shot for another 175 fps or so.

Hi everyone,
This wad appears to be Win answer to the BP28HV wad, personally I liked Winchesters old loading before HS hulls.
In the old 1 oz, and white box 3/4oz Super X loads, they used thier paper cup overpowder wad with thier fiber cusion wads and MK5 shot collar. Those actually cusioned the shot. No need for anything heavier than 7/8 of cusioned chilled shot or copper or nickel.
A shot cusion(in my humble opinion) goes a long way to improve pattern performance at distance; a good example was the cusion in the SP28, too soft for the loads, bottomed out, thus remington redesigned it and made it the PT28. Dimensionally they are the same except the PT28 has reinforcements in that old 8 shape cusion (the power pistons are known for) to control collapse.
Kind regards to all, Todd

Gentlemen: I'm still working on a 1 oz load for the 28 gauge???? Recipe I'm working with is: 25 grains of Lil Gun.... I'm wondering if I can substitute 20/28 powder for with different grains of powder load :?: :?:

Has anyone ever used Lil Gun with success for 28 or 410 :?: :?:

Has anyone used Fiochi primers Fio616 in lieu of Winchester 209 :?: :?:

Only reason I'm looking for a hotter load is we shoot a great deal of Sporting Clays, some of the targets are crows at 30-35 yds. with a 3/4 ounce standard load 8 shot, you can hear the shot hitting the target but no breaks. I'm looking for 1300 FPS

What do you think :?: :?: :?:

P.S. I'm still looking for 410 Briley drop in tubes for Beretta 12 gun with 28 inch tubes. Just missed some the other day.

Thank you in advance: Junnie

28ga, fiocchi hull, fio616 primer, lil' gun powder, 25grns., TPS28 wad, 1oz, 12000psi, 1345fps. Or same setup except 28grns. of lil' gun and a HV28 wad at 11000psi, 1340fps.

Do not try 20/28 with 1 oz. loads, there is no data to support it and I believe it would be too fast, pressure would most likely go >12000 psi quickly.

Has anyone used Fiochi primers Fio616 in lieu of Winchester 209?

Yes, I used Fiocchi primers but once you use them your hulls will not accept Win 209’s again as the Fiocchi’s will enlarge the pockets.

If you are not breaking targets at 30 – 35 yds. with the standard target load of ¾ oz. of shot at 1200 fps you are either not using enough choke or you missed. With the standard 28 ga. target load at 1200 fps each pellet carries the same energy as a 3 dram equiv. Handicap 12 ga. load. Put enough of them on the target and there is no doubt it will break.
